You will learn a simple trick that has worked for me for over 40 years. I discovered it myself and it can wipe away anger, fatigue, depression and any negative thoughts or symptoms of illness. At the worst you will improve at least 50% and it will cost you nothing.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • An open mind.
  • A few practice runs...just like a magician before he tries a new trick.
  1. Step 1

When any negative or depressive thoughts overcome you, practice being an actor on one of your favorite shows or a show of your own making.
This also works if you are sick, angry, frustrated, etc.

  2. Step 2

The character that you are portraying is a happy go lucky upbeat person who never lets anything get them down. Now step into character and begin to be you as this actor. Remember, everyone is depending on you (even if you are the only one in the room, pretend there are cameras recording all this and your job depends on you being good at it.)

  3. Step 3

Hold your head up... walk with a bounce. If you are doing laundry or dishes or some other mundane thing... sing, whistle and laugh about what it is that bothers you. If others are home or where you are at... smile at them 'convincingly' (because you are a great actor everyone will believe you) and say something like... I love this mess in my house because it gives me something to do. Big smile with big eyes and a wink! Cut! Now you are in the car and your role is Mr. or Mrs. courteous. You drive slower. You sing or hum and you wave at people. You give the right away and act excited knowing this is your role... and you are very good at it.

In the workplace, your character is the most efficient of all. In this role, everything is a contest. You are more upbeat, helpful and set the best example because you are always employee of the month. You compliment everyone on their good qualities or what they wear. You are like Ugly Betty... nice and upbeat... and oh so helpful. That nasty boss? Your character knows this boss is only nasty because they have a miserable life and you are going to be the one to fix it. So you bring them coffee, ask if there is something special you can do for them... and smile as if to say "I knew it!" and dance away as you make it so. Besides... you know these people are really your closest friends off camera and they are just playing their roles as well.

Tips & Warnings
  • I can honestly say that every time I do this, I am so focused on my character that I am no longer thinking about my toothache, my cold, my lousy job, the screaming kids, my ungrateful spouse... or my depression. I am an actor! After just a few minutes of acting the part... I am now living the part... and it is so good I deserve an emmy or an Oscar! Best of all... I am really feeling great!
  • If this does not work for you and you respond with something negative... I will pretend my acting role is that of the priest with a sense of humor and bop you on your imaginary head with an imaginary rolled up magazine and laugh!
  • If it does not work... It is only because you are not working on it.
  • I must warn you... this can change your life dramatically and you may be sought out for a better paid position in your job/career... You may draw more people in who want to be your friend. And you may infect others with the desire to portray these same characters. Oh yes... you may even attract a mate or excite the one you have. So be careful! To whom much is given, much is expected. Break a leg!

on 7/31/2008 thank you for the article. I needed this! I live in the East Coast and rude people, rude customer service is the norm here and I need to find ways on how to get over the negativity!

on 7/29/2008 lol "dance away as you make it so". Thanks for the advice - I feel better now. Have an annoying coworkers who likes to push my buttons. I'll use this on him whenever we have contact.
