Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Things You’ll Need:
- patience!
- healthy foods!
- a good OB/GYN, or midwife.
Step1
First.. Take every single shred of advice you receive with a HUGE bucket of salt. They aren't recommending the things for pregnant women now that they were 25, 15, or even 5 years ago.
Step2
Veggies! Eat them as much as your stomach will tolerate. Raw, cooked, whatever your cravings dictate. Try to fit in a leafy green veggie and a fruit with lots of vitamin C in every day, but if you can't, don't freak! Making sure you have a good prenatal vitamin will help make up for the days you don't eat perfectly healthfully (or can't keep it down).
Step3
While it may look yummy, Tuna harbors high levels of mercury!
Fish: Many OB/GYNs are recommending pregnant women completely avoid fish right now. Local waters are increasingly contaminated with PCBs, and saltwater fish like tuna, shark, and tilefish have high levels of mercury which can harm your baby's development.
Step4
ASK ASK ASK. Your obstetrician or nurse/midwife will probably give you a "foods to avoid" list. If you're questioning something on it, or not on it, ASK! OB/GYNs have nurses on staff to answer phone questions. Midwives can answer these questions just as well.
