Boston Terriers are lively, smart little dogs that make great family pets. With a little training your Boston Terrier can become a wonderful companion for years to come—along with years of fun and memories for your family—so follow these steps and take lots of pictures!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Leash
  • Collar
  • Treats
  • Crate
  1. Step 1

Boston Terriers are friendly little dogs, but still need to be socialized when they are young. Start socializing your Boston Terrier as young as 8 weeks old. Socialize them with other puppies and people, this will make your Boston Terrier much more stable as an adult dog.

  2. Step 2

Manage your Boston Terrier's behavior. When a puppy comes into your house they need to be housetrained and they need to learn the rules of the house. A puppy will urinate anywhere, chew on anything she can get her mouth around and get in the garbage every chance she gets.

Crate training can help you when your Boston Terrier is young. A crate is a great management tool to use when you can't watch your puppy.

  3. Step 3

Establish leadership. The best way to establish leadership is to use the P.E.G.S. method. Playing, eating, grooming and sleeping are the four activities that make up your dog's behavior. By controlling these activities, you'll control your dog.

  4. Step 4

Exercise is very important for a Boston Terrier since they are lively, active dogs. If they have too much pent-up energy, you can't blame them if they start to develop behavior problems. By mentally and physically exercising your dog, it will be much easier for them to live with you.

  5. Step 5

Train using positive reinforcement. Boston Terriers do not need to be trained using harsh training methods. They can be sensitive little dogs and negative training techniques can have negative side effects on them.

Tips & Warnings
  • Train in short, 10-minute sessions.
  • Use treats that your Boston Terrier really likes.
  • Never train when you are stressed or tired.
  • Make sure every one in your family is consistent with the training.
