Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Treats
  • Time
  • Patience

Step1
Have the dog stand in front of you.
Step2
Hold a treat in your closed hand in front of the dog's nose. Your dog should REALLY want this treat.
Step3
Move your hand slowly towards the ground. Your dog should follow your hand.
Step4
When the dog lies down, give an auditory reward (something the dog can hear - a clicker or a "yes") and immediately give the treat.
Step5
Repeat 1-4 until the dog downs every time. Add a verbal command - "Lie" or "Down".
Step6
Repeat step 5 until the dog downs every time.

Tips & Warnings

  • One-word commands are easier for the dog and for you.
  • The behavior likely won't happen right away. Let your dog poke and prod your hand until he figures out the behavior.
  • When he's reliable, vary the treats and treat times.
  • Training should always be fun for you and your dog.
