How to Grow Lettuce In Winter

If you live in a climate with milder winters, you can easily grow a number of crops, including lettuce, broccoli and cabbage. If your winter temperatures don't drop below 25 degrees on a regular basis, give it a try and treat yourself to something fresh and delicious.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Lettuce or other cool-weather crop seeds
  • Straw
  • Row covers, optional

Step1
In fall, plant your vegetables as you normally would.
Step2
Before the first frost arrives, spread straw around the plant rows, close to the plants. Pile the straw about a foot high.
Step3
If the forecast predicts temperatures below 32 degrees, spread the straw on top of the plants for the night. The next day, move the straw away just a little so the plants can breathe.
Step4
If the temperatures will fall below 25 degrees, pile more straw on top, or use row covers for extra protection.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are a variety of products available that make extending your growing season even easier, such as water walls and other plant-protection devices.
