If you want to make your own compost, but don't want to build a pile or compost bin, try this easy method. Next spring you'll have beautiful compost ready to use in your garden.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Large garbage bags
  • Leaves
  • Manure or blood meal
  • Water
  • Knife or scissors
  1. Step 1

Fill a large garbage bag with autumn leaves.

  2. Step 2

    Add a shovel of soil.

  3. Step 3

Add a source of nitrogen: a shovel of fresh manure or handful of blood meal work great!

  4. Step 4

With a knife or scissors, carefully cut or poke about ten holes in the sides of the garbage bag.

  5. Step 5

Add water, enough to moisten, but not soak, the leaves. Tie the bag closed.

  6. Step 6

Place in a sunny spot and each week when you go out to handle the trash, give the bag a few shakes.

  7. Step 7

In spring, you will have a bag of wonderful compost to spread in your garden, as well as a source of fresh compost for tea. If you have more leaves, fill more bags!

Tips & Warnings
  • Use compost to add organic matter to your soil, improving its structure
  • Add handfuls of compost around plants to add nutrients and beneficial microbes that will help fight pest and disease
  • When digging a hole for a new plant, add a handful of compost to enrich the plant's new home
