You've sprayed the Windex and scrubbed the glass. Now, you step back to admire your handiwork and a little dazzling sunbeam reveals the truth. There are raindrop streaks on the outside of your windows. No matter how many times you've seemed to scrub them off, they reappear leaving a dull, spotted finish on the window. So, once again, your fall cleaning schedule is thrown off-kilter as you debate what to do. You can throw up your hands in despair or take a few hints and have bright, sparkling windows that mimic the up-coming holidays.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • A large plastic bucket
  • A large metal bucket
  • Soft disposable rags
  • Old newspapers
  • 2 pair of Heavy-duty rubber gloves
  • Dishwashing detergent
  • Lots of hot water
  • Kerosene

Step1
Wash off the grime - Begin by filling the large plastic bucket with hot water. Add about one tablespoon of dish washing detergent and swish vigorously to create bubbles. Dawn Dishwashing Soap works extremely well.
Step2
Slip on the rubber gloves and with a soft cloth, thoroughly wash the outside of the window. Let the window air dry.
Step3
Don the second pair of rubber gloves. Using extreme care, pour the kerosene into a large metal bucket or pan that can be thrown away when you are finished. Do not let kerosene touch your skin or clothing. And, of course, keep all flammable materials or lighters away from the kerosene.
Step4
Take a soft cloth, dip it in the kerosene and gently wipe the window.
Step5
Let it sit for about thirty seconds and then wipe the window off with a piece of old newspaper.

Your window will be sparkling and the water drops will have disappeared.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use all disposable items when cleaning your windows. It makes for a much easier clean-up.
  • I've found that if I first wash all my windows with the detergent, by the time I'm done, my first window is ready for it's kerosene treatment.
  • Kerosene is VERY flammable
  • Keep all flammable materials, matches, lighters, heaters or any other source of ignition away from kerosene
  • Keep pets and children away from kerosene
  • THIS IS ONLY TO BE USED ON OUTSIDE WINDOWS AS KEROSENE MUST BE KEPT WELL-VENTILATED
