Antique rugs, or other textiles can make wonderful wall decorations. There are many ways to hang rugs, but the main thing to remember is to hang it so its weight is displaced equally. Today many museums are using Velcro to hang their textile collections, and its installation is an easy way to hang your rugs at home.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 inch wide Velcro
  • Heavy-duty sewing needle
  • Heavy-duty sewing thread
  • 1 inch thick piece of wood
  • Heavy-duty staples
  • Screws
  • Scissors
  • Staple Gun
  • Drill with screwdriver bit
  • Saw
  • Tape Measure
  • Level
  1. Step 1

Measure side of the rug that you wish to hang by, and then cut the Velcro to meet the measurements. Give yourself about an inch of space on each end of the rug so the Velcro doesn’t peek out from the edges.

  2. Step 2

Using your needle and thread, hand-sew the Velcro in a straight line at the back top of the rug. Make sure you sew the softer side of the Velcro to the textile.

  3. Step 3

Cut the wood with your saw to the length of the Velcro.

  4. Step 4

Take the rougher side of the Velcro and using your staple gun, staple it to the wood. Use your level to make sure the Velcro is secured in a straight line on the board.

  5. Step 5

Find a stud in your wall and then mount the board with screws and drill, and check with level to make sure it is straight. Make sure it is high enough so your rug will not touch the ground.

  6. Step 6

Press the rug into place on top of the board so the Velcro aligns.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the rug is very heavy use two strips of Velcro to secure it properly.
  • Be sure to follow the proper safety rules when operating a saw.
