Running an online live or pre-recorded radio show.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Windows Media Encoder Software
  • A broadcasting software (SAM)
  • Internet connection
  • A vey strong computer
  • Apache Server(maybe)
  1. Step 1

    Hey All,

This is actually a lot of fun, could be more fun if I ever got it out there more. The first thing you will want to do is layout the format of the show what is it going to be talk radio, music etc, how long is it going to be are you going be Mature rated etc. This helps keep you on target with what it is you want to be doing. Once you have your format laid out we can now move forward.

    1: Format of the show

  2. Step 2

2: Make sure your computer specs are up to snuff, as the utilities to run this will bog down the machine, and I your machine has a lot of process running, or programs running this will slow you down, and slow down the radio cast.

  3. Step 3

3: Now you are ready to get the necessary programs running, if you do this show as pre-recorded at night then upload the next day you do not need to use the Apache Server, if you are going to be doing this live you will need to install the apache server to your machine, please review apaches setting to set this up for your needs.

  4. Step 4

    4: Download windows media encoder

5: Download SAM broadcaster, you can use the demo as well.
(SAM Broadcaster can be found at www.spacialaudio.com)

    6: Install Windows media encoder
Window Media Encoder can be found at www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx

    7: Install SAM broadcaster

  5. Step 5
    encoder-1
    encoder-1

Once both are installed you will of course want to get used to the sam broadcasting software and how it works a bit more on that later.
The windows media encoder has to be running first for your live event to take place.

When you first open media encoder it asks you what you want.

  6. Step 6
    Finsihed Screen
    Finsihed Screen

    Pick Broadcast a live event.

After picking on broadcast a live event it will walk you through the rest select the options that best fit for your needs.

Once the live event is running (Even if nothing is happening) it will give you a new screen that looks like the picture attached.

  7. Step 7
    SAM Broacast Main
    SAM Broacast Main

Now that the event is running it has to be sourced from another program this is where SAM broadcaster comes in, open up SAM set your settings volumes and ques accordingly. Screenshot of the main Broadcast page is attached.

  8. Step 8

In the window above you have selection for things already in the program such as applause laughter etc. You also have two or three decks. These decks are you how you load your songs, you can set it to Auto DJ, run through a list of songs on its own, or you can manually cue up every song or do a mixture.

  9. Step 9

Once the program is running and you are playing songs the encoder should now be pushing out the data as a live event.

Make sure you allow connections so people can access the radio show, SAM broadcaster also come pre-defined with some web pages so you can upload by FTP as your songs change the pages on your website will change.

This is a lot of fun, I have done this before and that was how. At some point I may go back and do it again. But there is a lot of capability in this.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure settings are correct to allow incoming connections if you are behind a firewall or router you will have to change those settings accordingly.
  • Take a little time learning the broadcast software before pushing out live streams.
