Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 underground yellow jacket nest
  • 2-4 gallons of gasoline
  • 1 spare shop rag
  • 1 long-neck funnel
  • 1 10-foot pole
  • 1 match and lighter
  • 1 garden hose with a powerhead (safety precaution)
  1. Step 1

Soak the shop rag in gasoline the night before you plan to extract the nest.

  2. Step 2

Starting before dawn, when the nest is least active, attach the match to the end of the 10 foot pole.

  3. Step 3

Roll up the shop rag with the funnel inserted all the way through it. Plug the hole to the nest with the rag so that it fits snugly into the hole.

  4. Step 4

Pour all of the gasoline into the hole. Remove the funnel and plug the opening in the rag with a short stick to prevent the escape of any yellow jackets.

  5. Step 5

Standing 10 feet from the hole, light the match on the end of the pole and carefully light the end of the rag. Seek cover immediately.

  6. Step 6

If needed, use the hose to quickly put out any resulting fire. You may also want to fill in the resulting 3-foot crater in your lawn.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is always advisable to perform this extraction with a witness present, who can also help to fix any unforeseen problems.
  • It is best to do this when your neighbors are gone for the weekend, so that they do not get a rude awakening.
  • Wearing protective clothing is always a good idea in case some of the yellow jackets happen to escape, though that is unlikely.
  • Flammable liquids and open flame should always be handled with extreme caution.
  • It is not a good idea to attempt any removal of any bee nest if you are allergic to bee stings.
