How to Play a Perfect Hammer-On on Your Guitar

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Guitar
  1. Step 1

    See hand diagram before performing exercise.

  2. Step 2

    With your #1 finger Firmly press down the 5th fret on the D string (3rd thickest string).

  3. Step 3

    Pluck the D string. You will hear a G-note.

  4. Step 4

    While the G-note rings, press down on the 7th fret of the same string (D string) with your #3 finger. You should now hear an A note.

Tips & Warnings
  • The Hammer-on is a very useful technique. Most lightning fast guitar solos could only be played with the help of hammer-ons and pulloffs. This is because you can play a lot of notes, without a lot of picking.
