How to Be Irish

Many Americans can claim Irish ancestry but to claim that you are Irish takes a little more work. Apart from being born and bred on the Emerald Isle, there are a few things you can do to be Irish. Following these steps should make you ready to compete with the natives from all over Ireland.

Instructions

    • 1

Move to Ireland. Or, if you can't manage that, go for a visit. Seeing the country first hand will give you a much better idea of what being Irish is all about. Book a vacation (see Resources below) and blend in as much as you can. While in the US, live in a city or town with a large Irish population and participate in Irish events and societies.

    • 2

Learn the language. Gaelic is not the easiest language to learn, as the pronunciation and grammar are quite a challenge for English speakers. Learn some simple phrases using language tapes or taking classes. (See Resources, below.)

    • 3

Celebrate your culture. The Irish are known for their love of a party. Join or throw traditional celebrations with authentic dancing and music. Celebrate St Patrick's Day, but also be aware of other, more serious events in Irish history such as the great famine or political conflicts in Northern Ireland.

    • 4

Adopt Irish traits. Not all Irish stereotypes are false but a lot of them are. Knowing what is accurate and what is not will help distinguish you from a tourist. Self-deprecation is a well-known Irish trait, but so is a raucous sense of humor. Copy what you observe to be the most realistic traits.

    • 5

Be a sports fan. Sports in Ireland, as in any other culture, are an important part of society and identity. Unfortunately, being a Mets fan or cheering on the Bears is not very Irish. Hurling is the country's national game but far more popular are Gaelic football and soccer (also called football) with boxing, snooker and golf also competing for attention. Become a fan of one of these and keep up with your chosen sport and team.
