Gaze at the spectacular waterfall that gives Amicalola its name. "Amicalola" is a Cherokee Indian word that means "tumbling waters." The beautiful 729-foot high waterfall is sure to elicit "oohs" and "ahs" from your family. Park guests can drive to the top of the falls or hike up a paved path to reach the summit.

Camp at the park. Amicalola features a variety of campsites, including 24 trailer, RV and tent sites available for a nominal charge. A slightly more expensive option is the park's cabins, two of which are pet-friendly. Amicalola has a unique lodging option called the Hike Inn (see Resources below), which can only be reached by foot.

Stay at the beautiful Lodge and Conference center. The 56-room hotel, located at the top of the mountain, boasts lovely views and reasonable rates. Visit the Lodge's website to book a room or event (see Resources below).

Plan a family gathering using the park's picnic shelters, group shelters or ropes course. Reserve these facilities in advance, as they fill up quickly. Each requires a small rental fee.

      • 5

Participate in the park's other activities, such as hiking trails (one of which links to the Appalachian Trail), picnicking, fishing for trout and nature programs and presentations.

Take part in a seasonal celebration at Amicalola State Park. Each Thanksgiving the park hosts a buffet lunch and activities including butter churning, toy making and candle dipping. During the Christmas season, you can listen to carols by local choirs, see gingerbread houses and crafts, take a hayride or visit with Santa. Visit the park's official website for more information on seasonal events (see Resources below).
