Things You'll Need:

  • Pan for heating oils
  • Stainless steel or heat-resistant plastic container
  • Rubber spatulas
  • Stainless steel thermometers
  • Goggles
  • Rubber gloves
  • Scale
  • Molds
  • Plastic wrap
  • Non-stick cooking spray
  • Blankets or towels
  • Distilled water
  • Lye
  • Avocado oil
  • Olive oil
  • Lavender essential oil
  • Chamomile essential oil
  1. Step 1

Prepare to make your soap. Weigh the oils and place them in a pan. Spray wooden molds with a non-stick cooking spray.

  2. Step 2

Pour 6 oz. water and 2 oz. of lye and into separate containers. Be sure to mix lye outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Pour the lye carefully into the water. Stir until dissolved.

  3. Step 3

Heat 11.2 oz. olive oil and 4.8 oz. avocado oil until they reach 90 degrees.

  4. Step 4

Pour the oils into a bowl. Slowly pour the lye solution into the oils. Stir continuously until the soap traces. Test the soap by dripping a small amount of soap onto the top of the mixture. If it leaves a slight pattern, the soap is tracing.

  5. Step 5

Add .5 oz. lavender essential oil and .2 oz chamomile essential oil. Stir until well blended.

  6. Step 6

Pour soap into molds. Place the molds on blankets or towels. Cover with plastic wrap and more towels or blankets.

  7. Step 7

Check the soap for firmness in 48 hours. Remove soap from molds and cut into bars. Set the soap on screens to cure for 3 to 4 weeks.

Tips & Warnings
  • Lye is caustic. It should only be prepared outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Always wear safety goggles and protective gloves when working with lye.
