How to Make Baby Soap
It's fairly easy to make a natural baby soap that is gentle on sensitive skin and has a soothing scent. By choosing the ingredients yourself, you can customize the soap to your preferences.
Things You'll Need
- Pan for heating oils
- Stainless steel or heat-resistant plastic container
- Rubber spatulas
- Stainless steel thermometers
- Goggles
- Rubber gloves
- Scale
- Molds
- Plastic wrap
- Non-stick cooking spray
- Blankets or towels
- Distilled water
- Lye
- Avocado oil
- Olive oil
- Lavender essential oil
- Chamomile essential oil

Prepare to make your soap. Weigh the oils and place them in a pan. Spray wooden molds with a non-stick cooking spray.

Pour 6 oz. water and 2 oz. of lye and into separate containers. Be sure to mix lye outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Pour the lye carefully into the water. Stir until dissolved.

Heat 11.2 oz. olive oil and 4.8 oz. avocado oil until they reach 90 degrees.

Pour the oils into a bowl. Slowly pour the lye solution into the oils. Stir continuously until the soap traces. Test the soap by dripping a small amount of soap onto the top of the mixture. If it leaves a slight pattern, the soap is tracing.

Add .5 oz. lavender essential oil and .2 oz chamomile essential oil. Stir until well blended.

Pour soap into molds. Place the molds on blankets or towels. Cover with plastic wrap and more towels or blankets.

Check the soap for firmness in 48 hours. Remove soap from molds and cut into bars. Set the soap on screens to cure for 3 to 4 weeks.

Tips & Warnings
Lye is caustic. It should only be prepared outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Always wear safety goggles and protective gloves when working with lye.
