Modern Army Combatives is an effective and deadly fighting style. Originally conceived by members of the Second Ranger Battalion at Fort Benning, Georgia, Combatives is a training tool and a method of self-defense.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Step1
Join the Army Infantry. This is the probably the best way to learn Combatives since it is used as part of the Infantry's physical training regimen. Other Military Occupational specialties will practice Combatives and there are many on-post clubs that practice the technique, but nowhere else is the philosophy of Combatives such an integral part of the job.
Step2
Look for a school that teaches Modern Army Combatives; you can find them listed on the United States Combative Arts Society website. There are not very many certified trainers in the civilian world and most are located in Army towns.
Step3
Find a Jiu Jitsu school in your area. Level one Combatives draws heavily from ground techniques used in Gracie Jiu Jitsu, so a background in Jiu-Jitsu makes learning Combatives easier.
Step4
Study Judo throws and Muay Thai strikes to learn the principles of more advanced Combatives techniques.
Step5
Take your time. Modern Army Combatives training stresses a walk before you run philosophy, so don't try to learn it all at once. Combatives should be learned with a strong physical fitness program.
Step6
Get a copy of the Combatives Field Manual from a book dealer or through a military equipment retailer like U.S. Cavalry.

Tips & Warnings

  • The U.S. Army Airborne Rangers orovides an appropriate environment in which to master Combatives.
