Store bought lunch boxes never seem to last through the entire school year, are difficult to clean and can be pretty pricey. Make a distinctive lunch bag for your child out of an old pair of jeans.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Cut a 12- to 16-inch section from a pant leg. Leave the side seams intact.

  2. Step 2

Fold a 1/2-inch strip to the inside of the sack, around the top. Sew the strip down using a 1/4-inch seam allowance, to form a casing.

  3. Step 3

Leave a small opening the casing. Thread a 3-foot long cord through the casing and tie the 2 ends together.

  4. Step 4

Cut another piece of fabric from the pants that is 1/2-inch bigger than the pant leg's circumference. Turn the pant leg inside out.

  5. Step 5

Pin the piece of material to the bottom of the bag. Sew the bottom to the pant leg. Flip the bag right side out.

  6. Step 6

Decorate the bag with patches, iron-ons and buttons. Let your child customize the bag. Do not sew through both layers of material when attaching buttons. Attach buttons, sequins and rhinestones with fabric glue.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make a second lunch bag at the same time so there will be a back up when the first is in the wash.
  • Use a sewing machine for sturdy stitching that can endure many school lunch hours.
