How to Stitch a Scroll Stitch

A scroll stitch, also called a single knotted line stitch, is useful for creating borders. This stitch produces an attractive, knotted, curved line that resembles cursive lowercase "m's." Follow the steps below to accomplish the scroll stitch.

Instructions

1. Begin by lightly drawing a straight line on the fabric to use as a guide for the scroll stitch. This will keep the stitch straight.

2. Bring the thread to the front to the left of where you'd like the stitch to begin. The stitch must go from left to right. Make a loop to the right in clockwise direction.

3. Make a tiny vertical stitch, a couple millimeters in size, from right above the line down to the line. This stitch should be much smaller than the loop, and within the loop. Do not pull the needle all the way through, but leave it in the fabric.

4. Pull the thread with your fingers to the left, so that the thread loop tightens around the needle.

5. Pull the needle through the fabric. This completes the first stitch. There should be a small loop or knot holding the thread. If this is not the result, undo the stitch and try again. Chances are the loop was not done correctly.

6. Repeat this step by again looping the thread to the right, making a small vertical stitch and then pulling the needle through. The stitches can be whatever size you'd like, and are determined by the place in which you stick the needle through for the small vertical stitch.
