Step 1
Begin by lightly sketching 2 lines on the fabric. One line will be on the left side, and one will be on the right. These can be used as guidelines to ensure the stitches are straight and even. Mark the lines lightly with pencil or with a fabric marker.
-
Step 2
Bring the needle through the fabric to the front on the right-hand line. Hold the thread with the left hand. Insert the needle back into the fabric, from front to back at the original point of penetration.
-
Step 3
Push the needle through the fabric from back to front again. Do this a short distance from the original entry point, diagonally on the line.
-
Step 4
Wrap the thread, using your fingers, underneath the point of the needle. Pull the needle until the thread is tight. This creates a sort of knot to close the stitch.
-
Step 5
Finish the first feathered chain stitch with one very small straight stitch continuing in the same direction as the chain stitch.
-
Step 6
Continue the feathered chain stitch by bringing the needle up through the fabric front to back again, very close to the end of the straight stitch. Repeat the same steps, alternating between left and right diagonals, to complete the zigzagged feathered chain stitch.
