How to Stitch a Montenegrin Cross Stitch

The Montenegrin cross-stitch goes across 2 squares of Aida fabric, with the subsequent stitch sharing the second square with the first. This is an excellent stitch to use when creating borders because it will create a fuller border.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Aida fabric
  • Tapestry needle
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  1. Step 1

Thread your tapestry needle and tie a knot at the end of the working thread so it will be secure when you begin stitching.

  2. Step 2

Bring the threaded needle up through the lower left corner of the square where you want to begin stitching.

  3. Step 3

Insert the needle into the upper right corner of the square next to the square you are working on. This stitch should span across 2 squares in the Aida fabric.

  4. Step 4

Come up through the lower left corner of the second square.

  5. Step 5

Go in a diagonal direction towards the left and insert the needle into the upper left-hand corner of the first square.

  6. Step 6

Push the needle up through the lower right-hand corner of the first square and then back into the upper right-hand corner of the first square to create a vertical straight stitch.

  7. Step 7

Start a new stitch by starting in the lower right corner of the first square. Proceed the same way as instructed above to create a row of Montenegrin cross stitches.
