How to Stitch a Montenegrin Cross Stitch

The Montenegrin cross-stitch goes across 2 squares of Aida fabric, with the subsequent stitch sharing the second square with the first. This is an excellent stitch to use when creating borders because it will create a fuller border.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

• Aida fabric
• Tapestry needle
• Thread
• Scissors

1. Thread your tapestry needle and tie a knot at the end of the working thread so it will be secure when you begin stitching.

2. Bring the threaded needle up through the lower left corner of the square where you want to begin stitching.

3. Insert the needle into the upper right corner of the square next to the square you are working on. This stitch should span across 2 squares in the Aida fabric.

4. Come up through the lower left corner of the second square.

5. Go in a diagonal direction towards the left and insert the needle into the upper left-hand corner of the first square.

6. Push the needle up through the lower right-hand corner of the first square and then back into the upper right-hand corner of the first square to create a vertical straight stitch.

7. Start a new stitch by starting in the lower right corner of the first square. Proceed the same way as instructed above to create a row of Montenegrin cross stitches.
