Step 1
Start seeing a hypnotherapist. The hypnotherapist will first help you understand your behavior. Then, he will use suggestive therapy and imagery that you will be more open to once you're in your hypnotic or relaxed state.
-
Step 2
Teach yourself to use hypnotherapy. Find a place where there will be not distractions or interruptions. Completely relax, starting in sections from your head down to your toes. Focus on an imaginary object in your mind, like a candle in a dark room. You can also imagine yourself walking down stairs becoming relaxed with each step.
-
Step 3
Choose a phrase like, "I won't need to bite my nails again." Repeat it in a calm but confident voice. While repeating the phrase, use imagery such as a mountain scene or a beautiful sunset. Imagine a happy, healthy you in the scene.
-
Step 4
Repeat the sessions on your own or with a therapist. If your nail biting recurs then simply start the sessions again. Many find that a dose of sincere will power is helpful to the process of the hypnotherapy.
