How to Detect a Net Worm

Net worms can wreck havoc even on protected networks and systems. Its best to prevent them when possible, but every once in awhile one gets by and must be dealt with. Follow the steps below to find and destroy that nasty net worm.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Take down your network. Because of how a net worm spreads, any computers connected to the infected one are at risk. Manually disconnecting the infected computer from the network is the simplest way to halt its spread.
Step2
Note your symptoms. Carefully record what symptoms occur and what you were doing at the time. Check the system events log for more information.
Step3
Identify your net worm. Using the information you've collected, find people with the same problems as you. Forums and tech websites can provide information about the net worm's habits, severity and where to find it.
Step4
Scan your system and remove the worm. If you can find an anti-virus or malware tool that specifically solves your problem, use it. People with the same infection may recommend a particular tool that worked for them. Remember, though, that not all anti-virus tools detect all net worms. Pick one you know will work.
Step5
Shut off system restore. Many times, finding and deleting a net worm just isn't enough. Sometimes a worm will save itself in your system restore files, and reinstall itself every time its deleted. If your information suggests this might happen, simply disable the restore option.
