How to Keep a Baby Safe in a High Chair

When babies are not properly restrained while sitting in a high chair, they can fall or slip from the chair and sustain a serious injury. Follow these steps to keep your baby safe while you're feeding her.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Buckle your baby into her high chair using both the waist strap and the strap that runs between your baby's legs. If your child isn't restrained with these straps, she could stand up and fall from the chair, or slide beneath the tray and become trapped. Never use the high chair's tray as a restraint in place of the straps.

  2. Step 2

Ensure that the locking mechanism on a high chair that folds is locked in place every time you set up the chair and before you place your baby inside.

  3. Step 3

Keep an eye on your baby while she's in the high chair. Watch her carefully if you've ever seen her fasten and unfasten the restraining straps on her own.

  4. Step 4

Position the high chair a good distance from a wall, counter or table to keep your baby safe and prevent her from pushing off something while she's seated in the chair.

  5. Step 5

Do not allow your baby to climb into or out of her high chair without your help. Instruct your older children to stay away from the high chair while the baby is sitting in it to prevent them from tipping it over.

  6. Step 6

Determine if the high chair is still safe for your baby if you currently own an older model or if you received it as a hand-me-down by contacting the Consumer Product Safety Commission. You can call the Consumer Product Safety Commission at 1-800-638-2772 to check the status of your high chair model.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never allow your baby to stand up while in her high chair. If she tries to, sternly tell her "No," and return her to a seated position.
