Measure the area you have available for a couch, and then measure second backup area for piece. Note any architectural features, radiators, vents, windows, or other fixtures that might get in the way of the couch or put it out of balance with the rest of the room.

Make sure that you've thought about the rest of the room before your go shopping. If you're planning on buying an entertainment center, need extra seating, or will be setting up a home office in the living room, a couch might take up valuable real estate in the room.

Think function and then form. A small space requires furniture that can multi-task. Chances are, if you have a small living room, the rest of your living space is small as well. This means you need a couch that is slender and comfortable, and perhaps doubles as a bed or storage space.

Consider the futon. The hallmark of college life can grow up and become a great piece of furniture if you upgrade. Look for a futon with a thicker cushion, sturdy frame, and storage underneath.

Check into modular "euro" furniture. There are excellent convertible options that go from couch to bunk bed to desk to kitchen table in a few easy motions. Look for quality and cleverness of design when making your choice. If your couch will mostly just be a couch, buy one with a hide-a-bed for guests.

Head to the furniture store and peruse the aisles. There are plenty of couches, loveseats, and chaises designed to multi-task and fit into small spaces. Avoid anything over-stuffed, sectional, or blocky unless you want your couch to take over the room. Make sure it's comfortable and will fit through your front door before you buy.
