How to Combat Negative Pop Culture Influences
Most Americans live immersed in negative pop culture influences whether then notice them or not. Every time you turn on any form of media, pop culture invades. To keep away from it all takes a more active approach to not get sucked under by the media frenzy.

1
Demystify your perceptions of what it means to be a celebrity or what it takes to get from a model in a makeup chair to the cover of a magazine. Learn about the business of show business, and you'll find that most of the work goes into carefully crafting an unrealistic ideal to sell whatever it is that they need you to buy.
-
2
Realize that pop culture isn't everything. Yes, it's everywhere, but if you step outside and get involved in your own life and the lives of other people in your community, you'll suddenly find yourself surrounded by more positive influences and experiences than you'll ever find on the Internet or TV.

3
Seek out positive reinforcement. Find people, ideas, places, and experiences that make you feel good about yourself, your place in the world, and your outlook on life. Learn something new everyday that doesn't involve celebrity gossip and 30 new ways to starve yourself and the world will open up. So will you.
-
4
Build up your self-esteem and self-confidence and the negative influences of pop culture will affect you less and less. You don't need to be a hermit to maintain a good distance from the fanfare, you just need to avoid immersing yourself in unrealistic views that set you up to feel not good enough. Instead, focus your attention on ways that you can grow and develop new skills that make you feel confident.
-
5
Laugh at it. Pop culture is hilarious. If the ad on TV is quite seriously depicting a bizarrely thin girl washing her (poreless) face with their product and then suddenly being whisked off to the perfect prom in the next scene with a male model and bubbles are falling from the ceiling, laugh. It's funny, and it's funny that somebody out there is sighing wistfully and then running to the store to buy it.
-
6
Tune out. Mute the commercials skip the magazine; do things with your day that connect you to reality. Pop culture is not the ideal, the dream, or the guidebook for how to live your life. Don't let it dictate how you spend your time or feel about yourself and you won't have to worry about its influence anymore.
