Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a serious condition that causes patients to have abdominal pain, diarrhea and bloating. Although IBS is incurable, you can control the symptoms through medication prescribed by your doctor and with dietary changes. If you have IBS, you can find recipes that don't contain foods that will trigger an attack.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Speak to your gastroenterologist about any dietary changes you should make. Your doctor will likely give you a guide that tells you which foods to stay away from. Check to see if he has any literature that has IBS recipes printed inside.

  2. Step 2

Make an appointment with a nutritionist. A nutritionist can design a meal plan for you as well as give you recipes that you can use to avoid an attack of IBS.

  3. Step 3

Purchase the "Eating for IBS" book. This book has almost 200 recipes designed specifically with the IBS patient in mind. All foods found in the recipes are digestion friendly.

  4. Step 4

Join an IBS online support group. Patients with IBS usually join an online forum in order to deal with the embarrassing symptoms that are related to IBS. A forum is also a good place to exchange recipes that don't upset the gut.

  5. Step 5

Find recipes for IBS patients on the Internet. The most useful website for IBS patients is the Help for IBS site. It contains recipes that are dairy free, low fat and high in fiber.

Tips & Warnings
  • Foods that are high in fat are likely to trigger an IBS attack. High fat meals cause your digestive tract to work harder.
  • Bland foods are likely to be the best choices for IBS patients. Spicy foods are also known to cause IBS symptoms.

on 12/1/2008 I see soy used as an alternative, but I am also allergic to soy. What else to eat? I use rice milk in cereals.
