Aluminum foil is a staple in most homes and we tend to think of it as an item that is used in the house. You can take aluminum foil into the garden and put it to work in all sorts of ways. Its metallic, rust-proof, reflective and waterproof properties make it the perfect garden assistant.

      Prevent "southwest disease" or sunscald on young trees in the winter. Wrap the tree trunks with a few layers of aluminum foil to keep the sun's winter rays from reactivating dormant cells beneath the bark and subjecting them to nigh time freezing temperatures, which can injure the tree.

      Keep hungry slugs and bugs out of your vegetable garden. Mix thin strips of aluminum foil into the garden mulch.

      Startle crows and other birds to keep them out of the fruit trees. Wrap seashells with aluminum foil and hang them with fishing line from the branches of the trees. Try hanging strips of foil from the branches in a similar fashion.

      Bathe plants in light all day long with a sun box. Cut the top and one long side away from a cardboard box. Line the interior three sides and bottom with aluminum foil, shiny side up. Set the box near a sunny windows and place the plants inside the box.

      Fashion a seed incubator with a shoe box and aluminum foil. Line the box with foil, shiny side up and extend the foil over the sides of the box by about 2 inches. Poke several small holes through the foil for drainage. Fill halfway with potting soil. Plant and water the seeds. Set the box in a drainage tray in a sunny window.
