Genital herpes is one of the most common STDs in the U.S. It is caused by the herpes simplex virus and, although treatable, it can't be cured. Once you have been diagnosed with genital herpes, you should avoid triggers that can lead to an outbreak.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Protect yourself during sex. If you have unprotected sex and contract another STD, you are more likely to suffer from a recurrence of genital herpes. You also want to protect the genital area from too much friction during sex. This can also lead to an outbreak.

  2. Step 2

Control your anxiety. In periods of stress, your body begins to feel run down. If you are feeling overly stressed, it can trigger a reappearance of genital herpes. Learn stress management techniques if you have been diagnosed with herpes.

  3. Step 3

Watch out for outbreaks during times of illness. Any type of disease or disorder can trigger a herpes outbreak.

  4. Step 4

Curb your drinking. Overindulging in alcohol is another trigger for herpes. Practicing good nutrition also protects you against recurrences of the herpes simplex virus.

  5. Step 5

Wear protective clothing when out in the sun. Oddly enough, exposure to UV rays can cause an outbreak of genital herpes.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have the herpes simplex virus, it does not necessarily mean that you will suffer from outbreaks. Only about 25 percent of diagnosed patients have symptomatic recurrences.
  • Don't be surprised if you tend to suffer from an outbreak during your period. Menstruation is another herpes trigger.
