Bumping locks is a newly publicized method that people can use to break into a locked house. While the technique has been used for decades by locksmiths, websites now show anyone how to create a bump key. In order to be safe from bumping, you need to buy bump proof locks.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Investigate the locks using sidebars that also need to be aligned to a specific depth to grant pin movements. These locks also have angles on the interior pins to avoid bumping.

  2. Step 2

Check out locks with magnetic pins and an inline system to detour bumping.

  3. Step 3

Find locks that have 4 rows of pins to create 22 pin possibilities. These locks are created to be bump proof.

  4. Step 4

Look into cyberlocks that use electronic encoding. These electronic cylinders are the same size as the regular locks that they are replacing. They require no wiring since the power is in a battery in the key. They cannot be duplicated.

  5. Step 5

Check into keyless entry. While a keyless entry system is a little more expensive than traditional systems, it is secure.

Tips & Warnings
  • Visit the website of The Open Organization of Lockpickers (TOOOL), an organization that was started in the Netherlands for hobbyist lock pickers. They test locks for manufacturers and give ratings on bump proof locks.
  • Some locks that advertise themselves as bump proof can be bumped with additional measures taken by thieves.
