How to Visit Pamplona, Spain

An hour away from the French border is the Basque city of Pamplona. Made Famous by the annual Running of the Bulls, Pamplona is a city rich in history and culture. Visitors can check out the many restaurants, shops, museums and other attractions found throughout Pamplona.

      Check out Pamplona's most famous attractions, the Plaza de Toros, or bullring, at the edge of town. After your visit to the bullring settle in at one of the cafes in Plaza del Castillo, made famous by author Ernest Hemingway.

      Learn more about the history of Pamplona at the Museo de Navarra located at 47 Santo Domingo. The museum offers exhibits that cover the prehistory of Pamplona up through the 20th century.

      Tour the Pamplona cathedral, just off Pasea de Hemingway. The rather plain facade gives way to a magnificently decorated interior, which amazes visitors.

      Climb the towers of the town walls and gaze at the surrounding Pyrenees mountains.

      Drive east of Pamplona for a day trip to the Salazar Valley. Visitors can tour the local manor houses, monasteries and medieval castles that dot the countryside.

      Eat a traditional Spanish snack of "pincho" (or "pintxo") followed by a pint of local beer or wine at one of Pamplona's pubs.

      Experience regional cuisine at one the of the many restaurants in Pamplona. Authentic Basque dishes include fresh game, salmon, trout, lamb and goat.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Running of the Bulls takes place during the first week of July as part of the Festival of San Fermin. All participants must be 18 years of age and sober to participate.
