Public speaking is often listed on top ten lists of all time biggest fears. Sometimes it may be a tough issue to overcome. Confidence is key in overcoming this issue. Volunteer work can be an excellent way to build confidence by improving self worth by truly helping others. Non-profit organizations also offer a variety of opportunities to speak to the public.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Start fund raising events. Fund raisers offer an excellent opportunity to speak with strangers and improve confidence. There is usually no prepared speech in this type of situation. This develops informal speaking skills.
Step2
Become a board member. Many organizations are looking for the next generation of board members. Joining a board means meeting new people and taking an active role during meetings giving your perspective on a variety of topics.
Step3
Seek the role of Parliamentarian. This is the person who is an expert on how to conduct meetings. They often use "Roberts Rules of Order" as a guide to determine if meetings are conducted properly. Knowing the rules for formal meetings is extremely helpful in understanding how to speak well in public.
Step4
Try public advocacy. Organizations are often invited to speak at various events about how the organizations affect the issues they were created to address. Information addicts who love facts and telling people about those facts will fit well in this type of role. Several areas within non-profits will make untrained speakers into great speakers.
