For many women giving birth vaginally after having a cesarean section is a very real possibility. Follow these steps if you want to attempt a vaginal birth after a cesarean.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find a doctor in your area that has a high success rate with vaginal births after cesareans. Some doctors are more comfortable giving repeat cesareans.

  2. Step 2

Discuss with your doctor your desire to have a vaginal birth. They can give you information such as the risks associated with a vaginal birth after a cesarean and let you know if your previous incision is the type that is safe for a vaginal birth.

  3. Step 3

Ask questions if you don't understand what your doctor is saying. The best way to avoid a repeat cesarean is to be informed of your options. If you don't feel comfortable with something your doctor is saying it is okay to get a second opinion.

  4. Step 4

Deliver in a hospital that is equipped to handle an emergency cesarean. The chances of complications arising are rare but for the safety of you and your child your hospital should be able to perform a cesarean as soon as complications occur.

  5. Step 5

Get a doula to attend your birth. Having a doula to help you with your birth increases your chances of having a successful vaginal birth. In addition, she can comfort you in the event that you need to have a repeat cesarean.
