A paralyzed dog creates unique problems for his owner. Usually a paralyzed dog accepts his situation fairly well but his owner must be well equipped to deal with his special needs. Follow these steps to learn to cope with a paralyzed dog.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Discuss your dog's special needs with her veterinarian. If your dog is facing a life of constant pain or is having a hard time learning to cope with her situation then it may be more humane to have her euthanized.
Step2
Ask your dog's veterinarian if a dog wheelchair would help to improve your dog's situation. Some dogs that are only partially paralyzed benefit from the use of a wheelchair. It will allow you to continue with your daily walks and help to keep your dog in good physical condition.
Step3
Consult with your veterinarian to see if dog physical therapy will help your dog. Certain neurological problems or spinal cord injuries can be helped with physical therapy. It may help your dog regain some of his mobility.
Step4
Use canine diapers to help to eliminate the mess in your house. Paralyzed dogs have a difficult time controlling their bladder so you will cope with the situation better if you prevent accidents on the carpet.
Step5
Clean up any accidents in your house with a solution of vinegar and water, it will eliminate the odor and is safe to use around your dog. Keeping your dog clean by giving him frequent baths or using a dry shampoo will prevent his skin from becoming irritated by urine.
Step6
Give your dog plenty of love and attention. She may feel as if there is something wrong with her but if you continue to give her a lot of attention she will remain the same happy dog she always was.
