How to Hit a Flop Shot in Golf

Golf is a sport that the whole family can participate in and is a great way to hone discipline and training skills. The shots in golf are many and varied. One specific shot that any golfer needs in their bag of tricks is the flop shot. It can turn an average golf game to a great one.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the lie of the golf ball. How and where did the golf ball land? Is the golf ball buried in a sand trap? If so, how deep? The lie determines how big of a flop is needed for the shot. In other words how hard the golf swing will need to be.

    • 2

Picture the flop shot as a successful exit shot. In this visualization, adjust for any wind, trees or other hazards that hinder the shot

    • 3

Address the shot with the body angled to the left. This address is useful no matter what the lie is. Make sure the stance on the shot is balanced. Also, distribute the weight properly.

    • 4

Aim the exposed clubface at the mark. Whether hitting the shot to the flag or any other intended target, make sure the sure the wide-open clubface is targeted directly at the mark.

    • 5

Make sure that during the swing the clubface is turned skyward the entire shot. The golfer should not release the toe during the shot. Follow through the shot and finish the shot for as long as possible.

    • 6

Experiment with the flop shot. Each golfer has his or her own specific swing motion and the flop shot is no different.
