How to Work for a Carnival

Warm weather means time for carnivals in most areas. Carnivals can be found at State and County fairs or in the parking lot of the local grocery store. People who work for carnivals have a "gypsy" life style. If you like the idea of spending six months out of each year traveling through the heartland of America, then working for a carnival may be for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for carnival companies that are hiring. These can be found on the Internet or through city offices where permits are granted for carnivals.

    • 2

Apply online for large carnival companies that hire throughout the year.

    • 3

Prepare to submit to mandatory drug screening when applying to larger companies.

    • 4

Enjoy living out of a trailer in a different town every 10 to 12 days.

    • 5

Be available to pull up stakes and travel for at least six months out of every year. Some carnival companies work year round, following the warm weather.

    • 6

Have good enough health to work 12 hours or more per day in a variety of weather conditions and climates.

    • 7

Understand that working for a carnival pays very little. Carnival employees sometimes have to pay for lodging which also cuts into their profits.

Tips & Warnings

  • Look around and compare offers from different carnival companies. There are good quality companies out there with higher standards of personal appearance and who take better care of their employees.

This is a good article, but Step 4 is misleading. You may not have a trailer to live in unless you provide it, and if you do be prepared to pay for the dings -- electric, water, spot rent. Some people live in tents, or in their game, or under their ride or wherever they can find!
