How to Budget Social Security Checks

Social Security income should not be relied upon as your sole source of income after retirement. Unfortunately for many people, though, this is the case. Because of disabilities or lack of skills, many people who receive the government payments must make do with their monthly allowance. Keeping a budget is important for everyone, but becomes vital if Social Security is your only source of income.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Prepare for retirement by paying off as many debts as you can. If you know that Social Security will be your main source of income, then pay off your mortgage while you are still working. Housing is one of the biggest chunks of a monthly budget.
Step2
Share housing costs if you can. Find a roommate or make suitable arrangements with a family member to set up living quarters to share the expenses.
Step3
Watch for senior deals and discounts, since many stores offer senior days. Shop only on those days. If you do not see a senior discount posted at such places as restaurants or movie theaters, then ask about it. There are some benefits to getting older, so use them.
Step4
Join a consumer organization such as AARP. They arrange for all kinds of discounts on travel and insurance.
Step5
Clip coupons and use them. Your food budget should not vary much from week to week, allowing you to figure out how much you need for the month. Coupons can give you those few extra dollars you need for extras.
Step6
Check out your city and regional community centers and other activities available to seniors. These activities are often free or low cost and can greatly enhance your entertainment and social life without adding expenses to your tight budget.
