From Quick Guide: Computer Programming 101
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Obtain knowledge in the area of computer programming either by completing a degree in Computer Programming or Computer Information Systems or by taking courses so you are knowledgeable with the basic programming languages such as C++ and Visual Basic. You may wish to get a degree in Computer Education, which is a degree that specializes in the teaching of computer studies.

  2. Step 2

Find out what type of techniques work best when you are tutoring a student for computer programming. If the students are seeing you for tutoring, they are likely already struggling with computer programming. You need to find out the best way to keep them motivated and enthusiastic about the subject. Take some classes or read some books to find out winning techniques on how to tutor students.

  3. Step 3

Seek out a place where you can hold tutoring sessions. This needs to be a quiet place where the students can concentrate on the computer programming. You will also need to make sure you have a computer available with the platforms needed to teach students how to program. You could choose to do this in your home, the student's home, a library or an empty classroom.

  4. Step 4

Set a rate that you will charge for a tutoring session. The more experience you have with tutoring and the more expertise you have with computer programming will allow you to charge a higher rate. The rate charged by tutors can range anywhere from $25-$75 depending on your experience and the demand of the local market.

  5. Step 5

Call your local high schools to get the word out that you are tutoring computer programming. It's also a good idea to get into contact with teachers and professors of computer programming because they will be in the closest contact with your potential students.

  6. Step 6

Hang fliers and place classified ads that inform students and parents of your tutoring services. Make sure that they are straight to the point and provide contact information.

  7. Step 7

Consider becoming an online tutor in the subject of computer programming. You can choose to do this independently or through an online service such as "Tutor.com" or "Brainfuse."

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't send in money to an online tutoring service. They should be the ones paying you.
  • Check with the Better Business Bureau considering any tutoring agency or service you are considering joining.
