Vaginal infections can occur in women who have forgotten to remove their tampon. If you have a vaginal infection, you'll notice a vaginal discharge as well as a foul smell. Severe vaginal infections can lead to more serious symptoms like pain, redness, and swelling. You need to seek out treatment if you believe a tampon caused a vaginal infection.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Keep all items out of your vagina until you are examined by a doctor. You should avoid using tampons or having sex until you get treatment for the infection.

  2. Step 2

Make an appointment with your gynecologist. Let him know your symptoms and tell him if you forgot to remove a tampon.

  3. Step 3

Undergo a pelvic exam. The doctor needs to examine your genitals and vagina to study the outward appearance of the area. They may take a sample of your discharge for lab analysis.

  4. Step 4

Get antibiotics if you are diagnosed with Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). TSS is a serious infection that has been linked to the use of tampons.

  5. Step 5

Use the prescribed cream recommended by your doctor. For certain tampon-related vaginal infections, you may need to use a topical cream daily until the infection clears up.

Tips & Warnings
  • To prevent future infections from tampons, change them often and pick the proper flow type. The tampons should not get wet while inserted in your vagina. You should also consider relying on pads during your period.
  • There are new studies being conducted on the possibility of developing tampons that actually ward off vaginal infections when inserted.
