Prior to 1927, wax paper was sold in sheets that tended to stick together on warm days. Inventor Nicholas Marcalus created a roll of wax paper that came in a box with an attached cutter, and wax paper became a household staple. Besides being handy in the kitchen, wax paper is useful all around the house.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use this cake decorating trick to get the writing on the cake right the first time: cut a piece of wax paper the same size as the top of the cake. Use the cake pan as a guide. Invert the cake pan and place the wax paper on it. Pipe the message and name onto the wax paper, then place the cake pan and the wax paper in the freezer for about 45 minutes. Loosen the hardened frosting and use a spatula to slide it onto the cake.

  2. Step 2

Make a funnel to transfer spices into small jars. Roll a piece of wax paper into the desired shape. Do the same for liquids but use several layers taking care not to line up the seams.

  3. Step 3

Fix a sticky waffle iron. Place a piece of waxed paper between the plates while the waffle iron heats up to temporarily help the waffles release easier.

  4. Step 4

Help keep wood cutting boards clean with wax paper. Put three layers of wax paper over the cutting board when slicing raw meat. Discard the paper immediately when finished.

  5. Step 5

Line the top of kitchen cabinets with wax paper to catch dust and grease. Gather them up once a month and put down a fresh layer and save cleaning time.

  6. Step 6

Slide a piece of wax paper over a retracting car antenna to coat the shaft to restore the smooth action. Help repel grime with the light coating of wax from the paper.

  7. Step 7

Deter rust on cast iron by rubbing a sheet of wax paper over the surface while the Dutch oven or skillet is still warm after washing. Place a piece of wax paper between the pot and the lid before storing.
