The Brown ****y is a large tropical seabird that is distinctive looking and easily spotted. Here's how to identify the Brown ****y.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn about the habitat and range of the Brown ****ies. These seabirds live in tropical waters between 30 degrees north latitude and 30 degrees south latitude. They summer in the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean and near the Gulf of California. You'll spot the Brown ****y on islands during breeding season and on the ocean the rest of the time.

  2. Step 2

Observe the appearance of the Brown ****y. These birds have dark brown upperparts including the head, throat and chest. Their underparts also are white and the wings are lined with white. Brown ****ies have long, fan-shaped tails and long, pointed wings. They also have a long neck, a long bill and webbing between their toes.

  3. Step 3

Marvel at the Brown ****y's size. These large birds measure between 26- and 34-inches long. They weigh between 2 and 4 pounds and have a wingspan that ranges from 51 to 60 inches. Female Brown ****ies are larger than the males.

  4. Step 4

Listen to the sounds made by the Brown ****y. When breeding, Brown ****ies make loud, harsh honks or whistling sounds. The birds are usually silent when they fly at sea.

  5. Step 5

Watch the Brown ****y's behavior. They dive-plunge into the sea from heights as high as 50 feet when they feed. During flight, this strong, direct flyer alternates glides with fairly rapid wing beats.

Tips & Warnings
  • Female Brown ****ies have yellow skin near their eyes, while males have blue skin near their eyes.
  • Other adult ****ies do not have a sharp separation between the white belly and the dark brown chest like the Brown ****y.
