Search finance websites, such MSN as Money. The user-friendly style of writing makes it easy to find tax checklists. You'll also find out about tax changes that affect you. While you're online, visit a tax preparation checklist website (see Resouces below).

Buy a copy of "Money" or "Kiplingers Personal Finance" that focuses on taxes. It's like your own personal guide to preparing for taxes.

Contact the IRS. The organization publishes a guide called Publication 17 to help you with this year's taxes and planning for next year as well.

Look at the IRS website. It full of helpful information that informs you what you need for tax preparation. Plus you can find a link for a pdf copy of Publication 17.

Find out if you qualify for special tax help. The IRS partners with community groups to provide tax assistance. If your annual income is under $38,000, you qualify for free tax help from the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). People over 60 can receive free tax help from the Tax Counseling for the Elderly program.
