How to Install Google's Picasa

Picasa is a free photo editing software from Google that you can download to organize, edit, enhance, print and share your photos and graphics. There are versions available for most applications.

Instructions

      Navigate to the Picasa website (see Resources below). Check system requirements to ensure your system is compatible and that you download the correct version. Double-click the "Download Picasa Now" button.

      Choose the "Run" button in the File Download dialog box that opens next.

      Click the "Run" button again in the next dialog box.

      Agree to Google Terms of Service. Print these out for later reference by clicking on the printable version link at the bottom of the "Terms of Service" dialog box.

      Click the "Install" button in the next dialog box.

      Choose the location of the installation on your computer and click "Complete."

      Clear check boxes as needed in the next dialog box by clicking on the check marks.

      Select the "Finish" button and another dialog box will open. Choose the locations on your computer from which you want the software to gather pictures. Mark the correct radio button and click the "Continue" button to complete the application.

Tips & Warnings

  • Picasa supports the following file types: jpg, bmp, gif, png, psd, tif, avi, mpg, wmv, asf, mov and RAW data files. Compatible camera brands supported are Kodak, Nikon, Minolta, Pentax and Canon.

  • Users of older Windows operating systems, such as Windows 98 and ME, may download an older version of Picasa, although it will no longer work at some future point. Mac and Linux versions of Picasa are also available.

  • You must be of legal age in your state to accept the conditions of Google's terms of service for Picasa.

    warning: don't invest tons of time tagging- or rating photos if you ever plan to upgrade to lightroom. It's a b|tch to get the photos out, and you lose all your tags and ratings effectively.
