Talk about the effects the surgery will have on your sex life. Recognize that you won't be able to have sex after the hysterectomy until your physician approves it; most couples have to wait 4 to 6 weeks. Some women are hesitant to have sex after a hysterectomy or may need more time before they're ready. Couples should discuss these possibilities and agree to support one another.

Support one another. If you're having the hysterectomy, let your spouse know how much you need his support. Give him examples of how he can be there for you throughout the experience. If your spouse is having the hysterectomy, listen carefully to her fears and let her know you're there to help. Be patient and kind as you help your spouse prepare for the hysterectomy.
