Step 1
Wait until the last or next to last round to draft a kicker. In a traditional scoring system, the difference between the top kicker and the tenth ranked kicker is 30 points. That is less than 2 points per game over a 16-game regular season.

Step 2
Research the offense of the teams' kicker. If the kicker plays for a team that does deeply advance the ball often, this does not bode well for the kickers scoring chances. Note that some teams with mediocre offenses will give a kicker more chances to score field goals. However, these teams are the exception to the rule.

Step 3
Look at the kicker's record of accomplishment. Kickers in the NFL often play into their late thirties and some into their forties without a major falloff in production.

Determine where the kicker plays his home games. Kickers that play football in domes or warm weather climates have a greater opportunity for success than kickers who play outdoors or in colder climates.
