A sublet college apartment can be a great deal for summer months or a semester since rent can be negotiated to your advantage. Not all college students clean regularly, so a thorough going-over before your move is a good idea.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Disinfectant cleaner
  • Disinfectant cleanser
  • Eraser cleaning pads
  • Cleaning cloths
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Broom
  1. Step 1

Walk through the college sublet apartment and make mental or written notes. Look in places where students often don't bother to clean such as under the sink, in the oven, in the refrigerator and the backs of closets. Get rid of any trash and food you find.

  2. Step 2

Tackle the kitchen floor. Sweep or vacuum thoroughly and then do a hard scrub on hands and knees. Dig in the corners to get grime out, using a table knife wrapped in a damp dishcloth.

  3. Step 3

Do the remainder of the floors. Rent a carpet steam cleaner from the local hardware store or grocery store. In a college sublet, you don't know when carpets were last cleaned of dug-in dust and dirt.

  4. Step 4

Wash out all cupboards and closets. Fill the kitchen sink or a bucket with disinfectant and warm water. Rinse frequently. Watch for bug infestations. Students often leave out food that attract roaches and other invaders.

  5. Step 5

Pay attention to the bathroom. Go over the floor in the same way as the kitchen. Scrub the tiles and tub, and then disinfect the toilet.

  6. Step 6

Remember the windowsills, windows and baseboards. If the previous tenant wasn't much of a cleaner, dirt can accumulate in these areas.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use an eraser cleaning pad on fingerprints, wall marks or anything that you can't easily clean.
  • Work left to right and top to bottom. For instance, in the kitchen start at the left hand side of cabinets at the top and work over, then do the next level. This keeps you from getting distracted by other areas.
  • Carry a garbage bag with you all around the college sublet apartment to avoid extra steps back and forth to throw things away.
