Pageant viewers critique how contestants look in particular outfits and contestants' performances. Few armchair critics know the art and science behind the pageant industry. Contestants quickly learn the ins and outs of presenting themselves to gain the best advantage. Hair style selection is an aspect of pageants that involves showcasing muscle tone and facial expressions. Follow the steps to select appropriate hairstyles.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide on and prepare for the type of hairstyle for each part of the competition.

  2. Step 2

Keep hair from falling loosely over the shoulders during the swimsuit competition. Understand that contestants want to show off shoulders and as much other physique when wearing a swimsuit. Pull hair back in either a high ponytail or a low ponytail so judges can see your shoulders and back while you model and make turns.

  3. Step 3

Choose a style you are most comfortable with for the evening gown competition. Understand that up-dos often look good with halter style dresses. Make sure that hair is full at the top if you decide to wear your hair down. Curl it at the bottom except when the hair looks better straight.

  4. Step 4

Be creative with the top of your head if you decide to wear your hair half up and half down. Do loops, curl it or just let it fall straight.

  5. Step 5

Style hair in a bun, pigtails or braids as an alternative look for evening gown. Wear a low bun for the interview.

  6. Step 6

Decide the talent hair style based on your amount of movement. Keep hair out of your face and restrain it from falling out loosely if your talent is singing or dancing. Remember that you want to focus on your talent and the presentation to the judges and audience.
