How to Play House With a Child

With all the expensive toys that beep, dance and do math, it's easy to forget that some of the best forms of child entertainment are not only low-tech but completely free. Playing the pretend game of house is an outstanding way to get to know your kid, foster problem solving skills and build an active imagination. Plus, it's great fun for both of you. Here's how to play house with your child.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Tell your child, "Let's play house." Explain that you are going to act out a family. She can be any family member she wants--mother, father, sister, brother, baby or even pet. Let her cast herself, you and any other willing players in whatever roles she chooses.
Step2
Start out the play acting by suggesting an activity. You can say that it's time to eat dinner and then pretend to go through that ritual. If you are playing the baby, pretend to cry and see how your child works through this problem.
Step3
Let your child run the show once he's figured out how the rules work. The direction his imagination takes you may be surprising. Follow along with his story unless he does anything potentially dangerous. If he's taken on an authority role, allow him to be the parent until it's time for the game to end.
Step4
Keep props and costumes on hand to make the playing more interesting. They don't need to be elaborate--instead of buying a pricey playhouse, turn a corner of your dining room into the house. Make use of old pots, pans and other kitchenware if you don't want to splurge on expensive play sets.
Step5
Throw in a problem for your child to solve to cultivate strong problem solving skills. Tell her that the cat is missing, that the brother won't eat his peas or that she needs to go to the market to buy food to see how she resolves these situations.
