Being a foster parent means opening your home for a period of time to children who have been removed from their biological parents for a variety of reasons. Some have been either abused or neglected, so being a foster parent takes a lot of love and patience. Sometimes counseling is needed to cope with a particularly troubled child. There are several avenues one can take in attempting to get foster family counseling.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Start by contacting the agency through which you've agreed to be a foster parent. They will either have counselors available to speak with you or set up a meeting, or can refer you to someone who can help.
Step2
Rely on the support of other foster families, either one-on-one or through group support meetings. Getting advice from foster families who understand the challenges associated to caring for foster children can be invaluable.
Step3
Talk to your caseworker about any issues you might be having. They will be most familiar with the children involved and may be able to offer you support specific to the needs of the particular children you're currently fostering. They also can provide you with background information about your foster child that might help you better understand their behavior.
Step4
Check government resources for foster parents. There may be programs convenient to you that will address the specific needs you require for your foster child. Advocacy groups may also exist in your area that will have resources to get you headed in the right direction.
Step5
Look for a private counselor who specializes in foster family dynamics.
