Most digital cameras come with software which allows you to download your digital pictures. This software often helps you archive and organize your pictures. However, Windows is able to download pictures from your digital camera to your hard drive without the use of software. While Windows cannot help you archive or organize your pictures, it is often faster and easier to download pictures with Windows.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Connect the cable which came with your digital camera to the digital camera and to the computer. After the digital camera is connected, turn it on.

  2. Step 2

Install any necessary drivers for your digital camera. If your computer requires drivers to read and download data from the digital camera, it notifies you. When prompted, insert the installation disc which came with your digital camera. After you have installed the drivers, you can skip this step the next time you connect your digital camera.

  3. Step 3

Go to "My Computer" to display the data on the digital camera. The digital camera will be displayed by a camera icon and can be opened just like a hard drive. The name shows up as the name of your digital camera.

  4. Step 4

Open the folder on your hard drive where you want to download the pictures. Bring the windows up so you can see the files on your digital camera and the folder where you want to place the pictures.

  5. Step 5

Select the pictures you want to download to your hard drive. Left-click on one of the pictures and drag them to the folder. The files will be copied to your hard drive. To cut the pictures and remove them from your digital camera, right click on the pictures and choose "Cut."
