Before picking out a specific digital camera you will need to narrow your choices down to a certain type of camera. Digital cameras are targeted toward beginner, amateur and professional users. Because the more advanced models cost more money, you will want to start with a camera which fits your needs, but does not exceed them.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start with a low-end point-and-shoot digital camera if you are a beginner. Point-and-shoot digital cameras have automatic settings so all you have to do is point the camera at your subject and push the button. These are also the cheapest digital cameras and will usually cost between $100 and $300. A point-and-shoot type camera will help you learn more about photography so you can upgrade to a more advanced model later if you desire.

  2. Step 2

Consider an intermediate model if you know some photography basics and are interested in trying to use your knowledge to take better pictures. These cameras will typically cost $300 to $500 and will have more manual options, such as ISO settings, exposure compensation and shutter speeds. These models usually come in higher resolutions than point-and-shoot models, which will also allow for higher quality pictures.

  3. Step 3

Choose an advanced amateur model if you know photography basics and want high-quality prints. Advanced amateur models have some manual features and high-resolutions of 7 megapixels or higher. The types will often have long zoom lenses as well. They cost between $500 and $700.

  4. Step 4

Look into prosumer models if you are a serious amateur photographer or budget-conscious professional. Cameras in this category are usually single lens reflectors, allowing completely manual control of the camera. Because these cameras have a high-learning curve, you will need in-depth photography knowledge. Cameras in this category will cost $700 or more.

  5. Step 5

Get a professional single lens reflector digital camera if you are a serious photographer and need the highest quality camera. These types of cameras will cost $1000 or more, but have the highest resolutions and longest zoom lenses possible. They will also be sturdier. This does mean, however, they will weigh more and be heavier to carry.
