Step 1
Understand that those who support euthanasia use three main arguments to make points that favor assisted suicide. All of the debate points support an individual's right to choose death for himself.
-
Step 2
Know the primary argument used by those who support euthanasia. A person in unbearable pain has the right to end that pain with death. If the person wishes to die but can't physically commit the act, another person appointed by the ill patient should be able to assist them in suicide. Drug-induced relaxation and coping is not a dignified way to live life. Everyone deserves to die with dignity.
-
Step 3
Offer a second argument in support of assisted suicide. Suicide doesn't hurt anyone else (at least in a physical sense) and suicide is not against the law. There are no laws stating that doctors and health care professionals have to extend a life by any means possible.
-
Step 4
Debate a third argument in support of euthanasia--that a person shouldn't be forced to stay alive if it's against her will. If death is inevitable and pain is unbearable, allow a person to speed up the process to permanently alleviate the pain. This also spares the caregivers who are bound to care for the person through a long and painful life.
-
Step 5
Prepare for counter-arguments by opponents of euthanasia. Opponents champion the idea that euthanasia is a rejection of human life, can metamorphose into a legal method for involuntary suicide and goes against morals that have been instituted since the beginning of time.
